HOME OF THE GREEN & WHITE STRIKERS

Green and Strikers Year-End Summary

Including the Buffalo Grove Tournament, which the Strikers dominated and won, the team played 14 games and ended with a record of 10-3-1 with the team scoring 54 goals (3.86 GPG) and allowing only 16 (1.14 GAA).   Zachary Hawkins (13), Bobby Giatras (10), Hector Alvarado (8) and Jason Scheer (6) were the teams leading goal scorers.  The stellar defense and goaltending led to a fantanstic goals against average and goal differential.  Overall, the season was a success as many of the players on the Strikers were new to Green-White.  The boys came a long way in such a short period of time.

Here are the list of players and the positions they played:  Strikers:  Zachary Hawkins, Hector Alvarado.  Midfielders:  Bobby Giatras, Jason Scheer, Gaspar Cesarz, Sam Murray, Sebastian Cantu and Steven Endres.  Defenders:  Connor Hilliard, Tom Eggert, Anthony Santangelo, Connor Ryan and Luka Djogo.  Goalkeeper:  Frank Cullotta.

Thank you to all the parents for bringing the kids to all the practices and games.  Without your commitment, this team wouldn’t have had the success they did.  And last but certainly not least, thank you to the trainer, Simone Lodge, for putting forth all the effort in getting these boys ready for each of the games.  Without her, the team would not have been nearly as successful as they were.

11/7/10 v FC Barrington Red.  2-2 Tie.  In the boys first outdoor game played on artificial turf, the Strikers came out hungry.  Zachary Hawkins took one for the team and used his body to deflect a kick which led him to a tap-in goal to give Green White a 1-0 lead.  Moments later, off of a rebound, Gaspar Cesarz scored to boost the lead to 2-0 at halftime.  The wind picked up in the 2nd Half causing difficulties in clearing the zone, costing us two goals.  The game ended in a 2-2 tie.

11/6/10 v Wauconda Warriors.  2-1 Loss.  In a showdown for first place, the Green White Strikers fell just short.  Wauconda scored in the final minute of the first half to take a 1-0 lead in a well played first half.  About 10 minutes in the 2nd Half, Wauconda tallied again to take a 2-0 lead.  Behind constant pressure in the final 10 minutes, Sam Murray found the back of the net off of a rebound to give the Strikers hope, however they fell short and lost to Wauconda 2-1.  The boys played a good game, however Wauconda was the better team that day and ended the Strikers hopes for back-to-back league championships

10/23 v Wauconda Warriors.  4-2 Loss. The rain stopped just before game time but the wind gusts did not. Early in the first half with the wind at their back Wauconda broke down the right side and put one past the goalie for a 1-0. The lead didn’t last as Bobby Giatras beat their offside trap and put the breakaway in the back of the net. That didn’t last long as Wauconda put in two more before taking a 3-1 halftime lead. A determined Striker team led by Jason Scheer and a goal by Zach Hawkins put us back in the game before a last second Wauconda goal ended the game for the Strikers with a 4-2 loss.

10/9 v. FC Barrington.  2-0 Loss.  Within the first 10 minutes, FC Barrington took a long-distance shot from outside the penalty box that found it’s way into the upper corner to give them a 1-0 lead going into half.  Early in the 2nd half after a minor injury to goalie Frank Cullotta, the referee called a quick restart before the boys were ready allowing them a 2-0 lead.  The Strikers tried hard to mount a comeback but on this day the visitors were in the end too strong and the GW Strikers 9-game winning streak to start the season was over. With 4 games remaining it’s a 3 team race to the finish.

October 2nd vs GLSA Premier Photo Gallery
GLSA Premier at Green & White Strikers

10/2 v. GLSA Premier.  7-1 Win.  After a sluggish start, the Strikers came to life behind goals by Zachary Hawkins (4), Hector Alvarado (2) and Gaspar Cesarz to coast to a 7-1 victory over Libertyville to improve to 5-0 in the league. Stellar play by defenders Luka Djogo, Connor Hilliard, Tom Eggert, Anthony Santangelo and Connor Ryan helped keep the shots on goalkeeper Frank Cullotta to a minimum. Converting defensive pressure into offensive opportunities in this game by midfielders Sam Murray, Bobby Giatras, Jason Scheer, Steven Endres and Sebastian Cantu made this a team victory.

Mirage SC at Green & White Strikers

09/26 v. Mirage SC.  2-1 win.  Finally, our first home game.  The Strikers struggled in the first half but excellent composure on a shot by Hector Alvorado, gave the Strikers a 1-0 halftime lead.  More struggles in the 2nd half until a goal scored by Zachary Hawkins gave the Strikers a 2-0 lead until Mirage scored a goal in the last couple minutes to keep the game close but once again the Strikers came out victorious to start the season 4-0.

Grand Athletico quickly tied it up to take 1-1 to halftime.  In the 2nd Half, the Strikers came out hungry and scored two more goals (Jason Scheer and Connor Hillard) to take a 3-1 victory.  Once again, the defense set the tone for the team led by Tom Eggert, Anthony Santangelo and Connor Ryan.

2010 Buffalo Grove Kick-Off Classic

After only a couple of practices as a full team, the Green-White Strikers decided to take on all challengers in the 2010 Buffalo Grove Kick-Off Classic on August 28th-29th. On Saturday it didn’t take the team long to assert their dominance with back-to-back 6-0 victories against Team Evanston Silver and Spartan FC Classic. Sunday’s first game again against Team Evanston Silver was basically a repeat of the first game, a 6-0 victory. Our 4th game of the tournament was against an undefeated Park Ridge White Lightning. This was a winner take all game. The first half was a tough battle and ended scoreless. Within the first few minutes of the 2nd Half, the Strikers took the game over with 2 quick goals to take a commanding lead and tallied a goal later to finish off Park Ridge 3-0 and earn the U-11 Black Championship. The tournament held 83 teams, both boys and girls of different ages. The Green-White Strikers were the only team in the tournament to finish with 40 points (4 victories and 4 shutouts). A truly amazing accomplishment for a team together for such a short time. I’m looking forward to the start of the 2010 Fall Season.
