Turning Defense into Attack

This is a great example of quickly moving defence into attack.

  • Defending player watches the ball not the player
  • He slows him down and shows him one way with a great defensive stance (side on and shows him outside)
  • He waits until the right moment and then performs a ’poke’ tackle to move the ball away from the attacker
  • He then takes the ball forward looks up and plays a ball straight to the attacker who goes on to score

Below is another good example of the goalkeeper making a good save and then ’rolling’ the ball out to create an attack.

  • Goalkeeper narrows the angle to make it hard for the attacker to score
  • He makes a good save and brings the ball into his chest
  • He takes the ball away form the crowded area on the field to the edge of the box
  • He then throws the ball under arm to the defender to start a new attack

Below is another video of a great tackle and then relieving pressure on the defence by taking the ball into space.

  • Notice how the defender again keeps his eye on the ball at all times and not the attacker
  • He also gets a good stance and ’jockey’s’ the player to slow him down and push him one way
  • He then performs the ’Block’ tackle by using the inside of his foot to solidly block the ball and player and thus take the ball from him
  • He then dribbles up the field into space to relieve pressure on the defence and start a new attack
  • When he is tackled notice how he then runs back to regain the ball

This is another great example of a tackle and great defence splitting pass which nearly results in a goal.

  • Defender acting as ’cover’ comes across to take the ball with a ’poke’ tackle from the attacker
  • He dribbles, looks up, steady’s himself with a touch in front of him and then plays a ’through ball or defence splitting pass’ between 2 defenders to set up a chance
  • notice how the winger makes a diagonal run across one defender so as to get onto the ball to try and score

Below is a good example of a parried save and then punt out to the wings to relieve pressure and start an attack while the attackers are still in our half.

  • The goalkeeper narrows the angle and covers his near post
  • He then performs a parried save (notice how the hands are shaped to make a good block) pushing the ball down and then dives onto the ball to smoother it
  • He then punts the ball wide into space to the wingers to start an attack and relieve pressure on the defence
  • This is performed quick to stop the opposition getting back into position
